Preparing For Moving House
Furniture
If you have desks, computer stations, cots, etc that need to be flatpacked, it is advisable to do this before your removalists arrive. It is a more secure and efficient way to travel with them. We advise putting all the parts in a plastic bag and taping it to the disassembled pieces.
Entertainment Equipment
Disconnect cords and leads from TV, computer, stereo, etc. Put these leads in their own box. It would be ideal if you could put the equipment in their original packing. If not, our removalists can securely pack them.
Bedding
Strip beds before the move please.
Crockery & Cutlery
Wash up any crockery or cutlery and place them with your glass and china. If you have undertaken to pack yourself, use white paper when packing to avoid newsprint on china.
Kitchen Foods In-Use
Tea, sugar, jam, etc., should be packed together. Remember that only dried foods, tins and spices can be sent for storage, no liquids, oils etc are acceptable. Please contact us before the move if you need any advice.
Fridge, Freezers, Washing Machines
Make sure you have emptied and defrosted your fridge and freezer before removalists arrive. When disconnecting your washing machine, lay hoses so they can drain any water inside the machine. Remember before doing this to have one last clothes wash, one less thing to worry about when you arrive.
Medicines
Check that all caps, tops etc. are secure. Use tape to seal the tops on. Check the instructions, your physician or pharmacist as to safe transport of medicines, particularly prescription items.
Garden Equipment
Have moveable sheds dismantled and garden tools cleaned and assembled together. Clean and disinfect dustbins.
Money, Jewellery, Documents
You are entirely responsible for the transit of those valuables, unless you have taken out an insurance policy specifically covering them for the move. It's best to take them with you personally. Make sure you set aside all passports, birth certificates, car log books, and other documents you may require either during the move or before your goods are delivered to your new home. Make up a special carton labeled "DO NOT REMOVE" and ensure that this is kept to one side.
Your Car
Before the move, consider getting the car serviced for the trip. Inspect the car and perform routine maintenance checks. If you are going to pack a heavy load, increase the tyre pressures as advised in the Owner's Handbook. If you are using a roof rack, check what weight you can safely carry.
Moving with Children
Young children will generally feel safe and comforted as long as they are in the presence of their parents, however a major worry for them is being left behind. It is therefore important that no matter what age your child, you communicate with them effectively. Moving home must not come as a surprise and you should introduce the subject as early as possible.
Pets
It is important to manage the transition of your pet as well. They can become insecure and anxious as you begin packing. Keep their familiar belongings available to them. Allinghams can advise you and can provide Pet Transport services.
